Prof. Luca Zan from Bologna University was the guest speaker of Wednesday Meetings on 27 January. The meeting started as Prof.Dr. Oktay Güvemli from the Marmara University spoke about accounting history from the Abbasids to Ottomans.
Prof. Dr. Zan commented the accounting pattern with regard to the management concept and; made a presentation historical cycling of this concept. As the ship construction technology developed over the time, the Arsenal was developed accordingly. Prof. Dr. Zan presented diagrams to depict production and management cycles of the arsenal which were evolved through the technological development in ship construction. Prof. Zan also lectured on how Venice and Ottomans affected each other especially after the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 and examined the industrial and militaristic similarities and differences between Venice and Istanbul.
Prof. Dr. Zan told the basic organizational skills of innovative thinkers of the 16th century had shaped the systematical management pattern of the production phases in the Arsenal; and this structure inspired modern management systems. The meeting went on with discussions about how the importance, development, current situation of arsenals could be taken up for demonstration in an artistic way, like a Biennial. The session was ended by answering of questions asked by the participants.
