Spanish artist Antonio Muntadas who lived and worked n Istanbul in July 2009 for the project “Lives and Works in Istanbul” developed and carried out by Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Visual Arts Directorate; has arrived in Istanbul for opening the exhibition comprised of workshop outputs.
Opened in Tophane-I Amire Cultural Center on20 January, the exhibition was evolved after a period of one year in which Antonio Muntadas, acknowledged as one of the most important living pioneers of the modern art, engaged with 36 artists by shuttling among three cities in 2009. The exhibition titled “IN BETWEEN-ARADA-TRA” features the works by young artists with whom Muntadas worked together in Istanbul, together with the outputs of workshops realized in Istanbul by his students of Boston and Venice; and will stay open until 14 February.
Significant as a multi-sided and multidimensional modern art activity for the first term of Istanbul 2010 events, the exhibition will display exploring, inquisitive and experimental works on Istanbul by 36 young artists. Various works of painting, shape, photographs, video, installation and books present today’s Istanbul within an urban, structural, social, cultural and anthropological contexts. It is particularly enriching the exhibition that the artists come from quite different culture, roots and geographies like America, Europe, Africa and Asia. Lives and Works n Istanbul…
The project LIVES AND WORKS IN ISTANBUL carried out since 2008 keeps on hosting artists from EU countries who have accomplished great projects in visual arts and contributed to universal arts. These artists are provided with opportunities for living, working and producing in Istanbul; and they are ensured to conduct workshops, thought meetings and production together with creative individuals, academicians and local artists of the young generation.
This project will eventually come up with an international modern art collection in Istanbul after the meetings of world-famous names in contemporary art with young talents in Istanbul through workshops where they will make art production altogether . The workshop exhibition of Remo Salvadori, the first artist of the project, was opened in September 2009; and the statue made by Salvadori was installed in Gülhane Park. Seven different art works to be realized by seven famous artists will take their places in public domain of art collection in Istanbul.
Within the scope of the project “Lives and Works in Istanbul”, Istanbul will be hosting the prominent names of the contemporary art such as Danae Stratou (Greece), Victor Burgin (United Kingdom), Peter Kogler (Austria) and Sophie Calle (France).
