Istanpoli goes on with auditions for the “Creation2010” by Meg Stuart

American choreographer Meg Stuart is coming to Istanbul on 5-6 December for auditioning professional dancers that are experienced in release technique and improvisation, for the production "Creation2010" which will be realized within the scope of "istanpoli" the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture project by garajistanbul!

What is istanpoli?

A Garajistanbul project “Istanpoli” means “towards the city” in Greek and it is supposedly one of the ancient names of Istanbul. The project “Istanpoli” is about five worldwide famous designers Michael Laub, Rimini Protokoll, Claude Wampler and Meg Stuart will produce art about Istanbul, together with Istanbul people. These performances will be staged first in Istanbul and then in various European cities. All the plays will feature real Istanbul people, mostly non-professionals. The guest artist will also hold workshops with Istanbul inhabitants.

About Meg Stuart

Meg Stuart developed her first choreographies in the eighties in New York. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from the New York University and was a member of the Randy Warshaw Dance Company for five years. On invitation from the Klapstuk Festival in Leuven 1991, she created her first full-length piece “Disfigure Study”. Together with her Brussels-based company Damaged Goods, located in Brussels, she began around 1994 a series of collaborations with visual artists, including Lawrence Malstaf, Bruce Mau, Gary Hill and Ann Hamilton. From 2000 to 2001 Meg Stuart and Damaged Goods created the site-specific project “Highway 101” in close collaboration with director Stefan Pucher and the video artist Jorge Leon. 2001 to 2004 Meg Stuart and Damaged Goods were artist in residence at the Schauspielhaus Zurich. In 2003 the company also began a partnership with the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz, Berlin. Meg Stuart/Damaged Goods are supported by the Gouvernment of Flanders and the Flemish Community Commission.

Meg Stuart held an interdisciplinary performance called “Solos and Impressions” in collaboration with garajistanbul; and realized workshops in Istanbul with choreographers living in Turkey. Interdisciplinary dance production to be realized in Istanbul for 2010 is based on that cooperation.
