A brand new urban experience is coming alive in Yenikapi gathering diverse priorities such as archeology, preservation of cultural heritage, urban transformation and transportation while this place is also the main transfer center of the Marmaray project which would connect continents Europe and Asia via tube-tunnel under the water.
A protocol was signed on March 4 during a media meeting by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and the Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency for making a master-plan on Archaeological Excavations conducted in Yenikapı Archeological Area. Yenikapı will be the biggest transfer point of Europe as the project of the century Marmaray will have been completed. The project has been going on since 2004. The place also hosts the ruins of the Port of Theodosius which were unearthed during the Marmaray excavations.
Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Kadir Topbas and Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency Executive Chairman of the Board Şekib Avdagiç hosted a media meeting which is also joined by Fatih Mayor Mustafa Demir where a protocol was signed between the parties for making the master-plan for all the work to be realized at Yenikapı Transfer Center and the Archeopark.
Call for an International Competition from Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency
Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency is taking this project as a new management experience that will have a profound impact on settlement structure of the city.
In this respect, the Agency, along with coordinating the process of designing Yenikapı Transfer Center, is opening this new program to an international architectural competition for conveying this project into an integrated management model. The results of this competition are expected to create a multi-dimensional urban experience for the world with many actors in charge.

After the signing ceremony, Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Topbaş, Istanbul 2010 European Capital of Culture Agency Executive Chairman of the Board Şekib Avdagiç and Fatih Mayor Mustafa Demir visited the excavation area.
